Malcolm Binns- piano*; Raphael Sommer- cello^; London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Vernon Handley

BBC Radio Classics 1565691932  (recorded 24 February 1976; this CD release 1997

(CD-rip; flacs, booklet, cover and inlay scans)

Recording venue: BBC Maida Vale Studio 1, London
Recording engineer: not given; Producer: Robert Simpson

Given the recent interest in Edmund Rubbra's music on the chat-box, I thought it worth posting this rather rare and fine concert recording. The BBC Genome gives the first broadcast date for the concert as 26 September 1976 (the first in a series of concerts for the composer's 75th birthday celebrations) and was rebroadcast on 3 January 1982. The eminent musicologist and composer Robert Simpson was producer. BBC Radio Classics (issued on the BBC's behalf by Carlton Classics) was a short-lived series that preceded the better known BBC Legends, but this very fine concert was never reissued in the later series.

Until Piers Lane's new recording appears as no.81 in Hyperion's Romantic Piano Concerto series, this and Denis Matthews' 1965 recording with Malcolm Sargent are the only recordings of the Rubbra Piano Concerto. It is difficult to imagine a finer or more eloquent performance than Binns and Handley give here - but no doubt the sound recording will be superior.

The composer himself conducted the premiere of his fourth of eleven symphonies at a Promenade Concert in wartime London (wearing his Army uniform on the podium as required by regulations). A recording of that performance has been issued by Somm Records but I think Vernon Handley is a more persuasive conductor. Handley was a great supporter and interpreter of Rubbra's music and it is surprising that he made only one commercial recording of a Rubbra symphony- the second, for Lyrita (with a wonderful booklet essay by the conductor). He also made a recording of the Soliloquy for Lyrita with Rohan de Saram - rather superior to the performance by Raphael Sommer here.

For me, Handley's is a noble and well-judged performance of the fourth symphony, the best that I have heard. It is only slightly let down by being recorded in concert with no opportunity to patch some occasional ragged playing by the London Symphony.

I must apologise for the poor quality of the scans. I borrowed this disc to rip many years ago and did not have time to digitise the booklet and inlay before having to return the disc. I have cobbled the scans together from various internet sources.

Appendix
I have also added an PDF upload of Gramophone's British music specialist Andrew Achenbach's well-reasoned survey of Rubbra's music and recordings from the June 2001 issue (even though he doesn't mention Handley's Symphony No.4 and is rather more enthusiastic about Richard Hickox's recordings of the symphonies than me). Not a lot has changed in the 19 years since then with the orchestral repertoire on disc other than the aforementioned Somm issue (Rubbra's 1942 performance of Symphony No.4 coupled with Adrian Boult's 1954 performance of Symphony No.2) and recordings of the Viola Concerto with Lawrence Power (Hyperion) and the Violin Concerto with Krysia Osostowicz (Naxos) being issued.

Review

"A contemporary of Rossini and Meyerbeer, Giovanni Pacini (1796-1867) never achieved an international reputation and, until recently, his music was generally forgotten. His Saffo (1840) concerns the legend of the ancient Greek poet Sappho, whose unrequited love for the handsome Phaon drives her to fling herself from the Leucadian rock. It was considered Pacini’s masterpiece, and the present recording clearly shows why. Having established a reputation as a facile tunesmith, his style by 1840 had deepened beyond mere imitation of Rossini. Though bouncy tunes alternate with the long, elegiac lines that modern ears find more appropriate to drama, Pacini’s thematic invention runs high. Recorded live at the 1995 Wexford Festival, the performance is punctuated by stage noises and applause. Nevertheless, there is a pleasing balance between singers and orchestra, and the singing itself is competent and often artistic. Francesca Pedaci’s Saffo reveals a commanding soprano, dark, emotive and poignant. Mezzo-soprano Mariana Pentcheva is at her limit negotiating Pacini’s passagework at least at Benini’s tempi. His choices aren’t unreasonable though, and his sympathetic flexibility is welcome. Tenor Carlo Ventre displays a ringing voice if not a subtle approach, while Roberto de Candia often achieves fine baritonal warmth. The chorus is well rehearsed, the orchestra livelyBarrymore Laurence Scherer -www.classical-music.com

My notes:
I have not added a track break between the first and second movements of the piano concerto, because it is unbanded and I'm not sure where the break would go as the music is continuous.
This lp had a lot of crackle and isn't the best pressing, the music's good though! I'd also like to note the timings on the lp cover are quite far out, the technics should not be off speed!

Turntable:
Technics 1200GR with Shure V15 (iii) cartridge and original VN35MR stylus.
Digitised with an IVinyl usb phono preamp and Audacity using ASIO4ALL at 24 bit 96 khz.
I've used clickrepair to clean up some of the crackles. I wasn't sure if I needed to use any other filters, please let me know if I should have for future reference!

Recording venue: Malmo Concert Hall, Sweden
Recording engineer & Producer: Robert von Bahr & Ingo Petry^

Here are two early BIS digital recordings of the contemporary Finnish composer Aulis Sallinen's symphonies in digital downloads kindly provided by MIMIC friend Howard. The recording of the second and sixth symphonies was one of the last actually made by BIS owner Robert von Bahr before he handed over to independent recording teams.

Until CPO's series of the complete symphonies with Ari Rasilainen was issued in the early to mid  noughties, this BIS series of recordings only had two competitors - with Okko Kamu recording the fourth and fifth symphonies for the Finlandia label before it was subsumed into Warner Music.

In general I prefer all of the BIS and Finlandia issues of Sallinen's often bleak but always dramatic music to those on CPO - mainly due to superior orchestral playing and recorded sound. In the case of Washington Mosaics, written for Mstislav Rostropovich and the National Symphony, this rather diffuse and, dare I say it, overlong work is much better held together by James DePreist.

The same accusation of prolixity may also be levelled against the sixth symphony, written for the New Zealand Symphony, but of course I have a personal interest and very much enjoy this performance under Okko Kamu. The third movement, depicting an abandoned gold mining district, is particularly evocative.

In the case of possibly Sallinen's finest symphony, the fourth, honours are just about equal between DePreist and Kamu's Finlandia recording (also available here on MIMIC along with Kamu's recordings of the first and third symphonies for BIS). Kamu is superior at the beginning of the first movement but DePreist soon catches up.

This lp had quite a bit of clicking and a slite warp which can be heard as gentle thuds now and then. I have used clickrepair but personally don't think they detract from the music.

BBC Symphony Orchestra & Chorus*; London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Adrian Boult

HDTT 3811 (recorded March 1961 and March 1962*; first issued in Europe as Decca LP SXL6006 in 1962)

(digital download; 24bit/96kHz flacs; booklet, cover and inlay scans)

Recording venue: Kingsway Hall, London
Recording engineer: Alan Reeve; Producer: Christopher Raeburn

A download of this HDTT release briefly appeared in the c-box in a 24bit/192kHz version. Here it is again in a different download as the music, performances and recorded sound are of such high quality that they deserve a more permanent home.

According to the HDTT website, this digital transfer was made from a London 4-track tape and the recording team is given as Kenneth Wilkinson with Ray Minshull and Michael Bremner. Conversely, the Decca CD issues that I have give the recording team shown above. I suspect that Decca is correct. The current HDTT booklet gives no information at all. An earlier issue of the booklet informs, in one place, that the transfer was made from the original Decca LP but in another, that the source was analog tape - so it is all very confusing.

In view of the large file sizes, I have uploaded as a folder rather than the usual zipped single file so that each track can be downloaded separately. I have also included the booklets from the two Decca CD releases and sleeve scans from the original LP release. In their release, HDTT have placed The Hymn of Jesus third and have the three movements of The Perfect Fool ballet as a single track. I have sequenced the music in line with the LP.

Rewiew

"This recording was a great surprise because I've heard Norma many times but listening to the young Deutekom in fearless, secure voice was an exciting experience I enjoyed tremendously. The voice from the opening phrases impresses with its abundant power, even registers and easy, healthy top, middle and lower notes (no squeezing, pushing or weakening of tone for this lady). The vocal authority in declamation passages is incredible and eliminates any competition. When we get to the cantabile however, things are more complicated. Deutekom fails to change the mood enough in slower, tranquil moments and this is one reason why Casta Diva doesn't quite have the impact it should. Furthermore she has a few intonation problems, the words are not always correctly pronounced (but at least they ARE) and of course in more florid moments her very individual coloratura spoils the scene if you've heard the role before. Fortunately here, this is basically only apparent in bello a me ritorna. But the sheer beauty and authority of her instrument quickly compensate and one only has to listen to 'In mia man' to hear one of the most exciting versions of this stunning scene and be convinced that this is a superb achievement. Hers was by far the easiest reading of this role I've heard so far.

Of the other principals I mostly enjoyed Merolla; a visceral Italian tenor of the Del Monaco/Corelli mould and an excellent choice for the role of Pollione. Troyanos' instrument is often too dark to project the qualites of Adalgisa and although Deutekom has a bright but mature sound, the combination is not ideal. But Troyanos is in fantastic voice, sings very well so brings enough musical greatness to the evening. With Grant perfectly reliable as Oroveso and Cillario at the pit matching their energy levels this must have been one of the great SFO nights. Though not perfect this Norma deserves 5 stars for the excitement it offers, the price and decent broadcast sound "Armindo - www.amazon.com
