Whilst these may not be top recommended recordings of these Britten works, this is a very useful collection of early and later works in fine performances and recorded sound. This disc was later issued in a 3-CD set of Britten's music with the English Symphony and String Orchestras; the latter drawn from members of the symphony orchestra.

The playing of the orchestra is very persuasive and Boughton displays great sympathy with the music. Roger Best is a sensitive viola soloist in the Lachrymae and Nimbus provides excellent, sometimes sumptuous, recording quality.

Thanks to the nice people chatting here I've started exploring Danish music through the out-of-print CDs of the dacapo label. This post presents a few works of six main composers, missing only the living Per Nørgård (1932).

The present recording of Carl Nielsen's Wind Quintet (1922) by the members of the DNRSO has been BBC-Radio 3 first choice. (Mind that 15 years have passed since then!) The disc contains also three wind quintets of a much younger generation, composed in the 40s and 60s.

Rued Langgaard was an outsider, no less talented than eccentric. Hear in this video how Ligeti discovered to be "a Langgaard epigone": interview to Per Nørgård.

For a brief period around 1920, Langgaard was creatively provoked by Nielsen, especially his radical Symphony No. 4, ‘The Inextinguishable’. (dacapo)
Symphony No. 6 belongs to this period: you can try Oramo's performance in Vienna, with No. 2.

Apart from this circumstance in his country Rued Langgaard was alone in striving for a visionary musical idiom as a continuation of the Romantic tradition with a Symbolist basis of the kind one finds in the works of Scriabin.

The Late Romantic symphony in Danmark had already reached its culmination with Ludolf Nielsen's last, composed in 1911-13, just before Langgaard embarked on his mission.
Odeon shared it: Ludolf Nielsen, Symphony No. 3.

With The Tower of Babel Ludolf Nielsen too enlisted among the devotees of the mystical schools of thought. [...] The outbreak of the First World War in 1914, which came during the very days when Ludolf Nielsen was fair-coping the score, was a brutal denial of hopes of all these elevated spirits.

Ludolf Nielsen's interest in Greek mythology was in keeping with a contemporary Symbolist tendency beginning as far as music was concerned in 1893 with Debussy's Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune. [...] Forest Walk belongs chronogically to this family of works.

Asger Hamerik went to America in 1871, at 28, where he lived until he was 57 producing all of his works except for his four early operas.
Symphony No. 5 shows that he has been a pupil of Berlioz. Symphony No. 6 for string orchestra was composed for Hamerik's 25th year of directorship of the Peaboy Institute in Baltimore.

We have reached the beginning of Danish Romantic music. To sample Gade's best symphonies I had selected the 4th/6th coupling, but knowing that his more personal – more Danish – compositions are the first symphony and "Echoes of Ossian".
The Collegium Musicum Copenhagen which is playing here consisted of 42 musicians with everyday jobs in other orchestras mostly in the Royal Orchestra and the Danish National Symphony Orchestra. The complete set of symphonies by Hogwood might be preferable: see Odeon.
(Odeon has also the boxsets with all the symphonies of Langgaard and Hamerik conducted by Dausgaard and the symphonies of Carl Nielsen with Schønwandt and DNRSO.)

Back to the 20th Century: Vagn Holmboe was very prolific and one of his notable achievements is the corpus of string quartets. They can be listened at this website, which seems useful for further explorations: www.earsense.org.

Here, the BBC Music Magazine offers a rather curious assembly of music with a Spanish flavour recorded at BBC Promenade Concerts - mostly with Peruvian conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya but with a single track of American music, by Gershwin, under British conductor Barry Wordsworth plonked in the middle. All under the title Fiesta!

Nevertheless, this concert of Hispanic and Spanish music goes very well, with works by Mexican, Argentinian and Spanish composers, all influenced by traditional music of their own countries. Whilst the British mezzo Ann Murray is no Berganza or de los Angeles, she is surprisingly effective in Berio's rarely-recorded orchestration of the Falla Popular Spanish Songs.

Harth-Bedoya is currently chief conductor of the Norwegian Radio Orchestra and has been music director of the Fort Worth Symphony in the USA for 20 years, stepping down at the end of this season.

Now 86 years old, Claude Bolling was a leading light in French jazz for over 60 years, winning his first competition as a prodigious pianist at the age of 14 and soon afterwards forming his first band. His eponymous big band has been a fixture on the international circuit for decades, and with it he made the first unabridged recording of Duke Ellington’s magnum opus, the Black, Brown and Beige suite.
Bolling engaged in stylish crossover projects with many classically trained French soloists of his generation, among them the flautist Jean‐Pierre Rampal (Suite for Flute and Jazz Piano, 1975) and the trumpeter Maurice André (Toot Suite, 1981). This concerto works the other way around, bringing formal, if not strictly Classical, constraints to bear on a quintessential instrumentation for mid‐20th‐century jazz, the guitar quartet. The concerto is not an abstract three‐movement form but a sequence of seven character‐pieces whose melodic and rhythmic flavour may be sensed from their titles, including ‘Hispanic Dance’, ‘Mexicaine’ and ‘Africaine’. Blues, swing and bossa‐nova are all synthesised by Bolling with tremendous verve for the combination at hand. Listen out, too, for the neo‐Baroque fantasy of the ‘Invention’, where Bolling shows he knows his counterpoint as well as Jacques Loussier.
Likewise, the Guitar Sonata does not bow the knee too deeply to Classical precedents, with its Jazzo Brasileiro setting the tone for a work full of virtuoso pyrotechnics. Neither Sonata nor Concerto has recently been recorded; the young Italian guitarist Duilio Meucci joins such illustrious company on disc as Angel Romero and Alexander Lagoya, accompanied respectively by George Shearing and the composer himself. Two more BBC broadcast recordings made at Promenade concerts in excellent stereo sound. These valuable recordings have been around on a number of blogs but currently seems to be elusive. This is not my rip, many thanks to the original poster.

Although Sir Malcolm was always recognised as a fine interpreter of both composers, he was never invited to record either work commercially. It's good to have two favourite symphonies together in such compelling performances. Both are angry works, written at times of great stress and although Sargent isn't as grim and cold as some interpretations in the Vaughan Williams the rhythms and detail are well pointed. Sargent uses glockenspiel rather than tubular bells in the last movement of the Sibelius which warms the atmosphere to only a little less icy that in the preceding movements.

Unfortunately the audience is particularly noisy in the Sibelius but at least they don't applaud at the end of movements as now seems to have become fashionable.
