Karita Mattila: Orchestral Songs by Hindemith, Sallinen & Merikanto

01. - 06. Paul Hindemith - Das Marienleben 'The Life of Mary', op.27 [21'53]
07. - 10. Aulis Sallinen - Nelja laulua unesta 'Four Dream Songs' [14'17]
11. Aarre Merikanto - Genesis* [18'42]

Karita Mattila- soprano; Savonlinna Opera Festival Choir*; Lahti Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ulf Soderblom

Finlandia FACD359  (recorded 1987 & 1988; this CD release 1988, digital download 2011)

(digital download; flacs, cover and back scans - no booklet)

Recording venue: Church of the Cross, Lahti, Finland
Recording engineer: Robert de Godzinsky; Production: City of Lahti

Here is another digital download kindly provided by MIMIC friend Howard. This recording disappeared for many years after the Finlandia label was subsumed into the Warner Music stable. Warner subsequently reissued the Sallinen and Merikanto works in 'Meet the Composer' CD twofers but the Hindemith had to await the 2011 appearance of the original album as a digital download. Given that this is an all vocal disc it is a great pity that Warner Music think it perfectly reasonable to issue a download without any booklet or song lyrics. It is also unusual to see a city credited with production of the recording.

Karita Mattila's singing throughout is very beautiful and makes this recording a must have for anybody interested in the byways of 20th Century music. Two of Finland's leading contemporary composers are featured. Aulis Sallinen's, Four Dream Songs are quite exquisite, particularly in the orchestral version of which this is the only recording. They were later used in his opera The Horsemen. His fellow Finn, Aarre Merikanto's, extended cantata Genesis is spectacular. It was his last major work, completed in 1956 and this again is the work's only recording.

I am not a great fan of much of Hindemith's music, but I was quite won over by Mattila's superb performance of Das Marienleben, ably accompanied throughout this programme by Ulf Soderblom and his Lahti orchestra. This is the third version that Hindemith made of the work.It was completed in 1959 and it is the first version with full orchestra accompaniment. The original's settings of 15 of Rilke's poems is reduced to just six in his third version. I have only seen one other recording of this version - on the CPO label. Recordings of the second version (1948 - with piano accompaniment) by Soile Isokoski, Gundula Janowitz and Annelies Kupper can be found in Davide's mega-post: (http://meetinginmusic.blogspot.com/2012/11/paul-hindemith-master-in-class-of-his.html).

01. - 02. Symphony No.5, op.50 [35'55]

New Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Jascha Horenstein

Unicorn-Kanchana Souvenir UKCD2023 (recorded May 1969; LP RHS300 issued 1969; this CD release 1989)

(CD-rip; flacs, cover and inlay scans - no booklet)

Recording venue: BBC Maida Vale Studios, London (?)
Recording engineer: Bob Auger; Producers: Robert Simpson & Antony Hodgson

This now difficult to find studio recording is posted here in response to a request in the chat-box a few weeks ago by umbemisitani and is not to be confused with the later broadcast performance of the fifth symphony included on a BBC Legends release.

This was the first new recording on John Goldsmith's Unicorn (later Unicorn-Kanchana) label. The recording venue is not given on the LP sleeve (scans included in this download)  and unfortunately this CD rip, which was provided to me many years ago by an internet friend, came without any documentation. Given that the BBC had engaged Horenstein for a broadcast of the symphony at the same time and given the BBC production team, the attribution that I have seen on the internet of the BBC studio as the recording venue is possible, I suppose.

Although this performance overall does not quite match Leonard Bernstein's with the New York Philharmonic (especially in terms of orchestral playing) made a few years earlier, it does have a standout feature of the side-drum conflict with the orchestra in the first movement which is absolutely thrillingly played by Alfred Dukes. I know of no finer recorded version. And John McCaw is also rightly credited as the principal clarinet. Apparently, the original edition of the score was used, rather than the usual Eric Tuxen edition, but I can't say that I noticed any obvious differences.

Many Unicorn releases have not fared well on transfer to CD on their own label - Horenstein's Mahler first and third symphonies were much improved by other transfers but this Nielsen release still sounds quite good.

Two wonderful compilation CDs from Lyrita's back catalogue, both issued in 2007. At the time of recording, this music was completely new to most music lovers and although there have been subsequent recordings of most of the works, few of these originals have been matched let alone improved upon. I particularly revere the recordings by Rodney Friend, Peter Katin, John Carol Case and Ian Partridge which I owned since their first LP releases. (Although some allowance has to be made for the deterioration in John Carol Case's voice production at this stage in his career.)  This is quintessential Finzi, along with the Lyrita recordings of the Cello and Clarinet Concertos already posted here on MIMIC (the latter originally issued on LP coupled with Katin's Eclogue and Grand Fantasia).

It should be noted that the Three Soliloquies on the first disc (conducted by Sir Adrian) are, of course, different recordings to those in the complete Love's Labour's Lost suite (conducted by Tod Handley) that begins the second disc and which otherwise is of vocal works. This was the first issue of the recording of the complete suite.

Beautifully judged direction from both conductors, superb recorded sound and excellent booklet notes by Diana McVeagh round-off two excellent discs.
