Kiri Te Kanawa- soprano, Belgian National Opera Symphony Orchestra conducted by John Pritchard

EMI Japan CC38-3220 (recorded June & July 1983; this CD release 1984. Also issued in Europe as EMI CDC 7471112)

(flac and scans)

Recording venue: Belgian Radio Studios, Brussels
Recording engineer: Neville Boyling; Producer: John Fraser

I was surprised that an internet search didn't reveal these recordings (even in reissued guise with additional material)  as being easily available. Unfortunately, this Japanese issue means that the sleevenotes are useless to non-Japanese readers so I apologise that I have abbreviated the scans to just the pages with English and French.

Te Kanawa's performances of seven of the eight songs that Duparc orchestrated are very beautiful and appreciate their very refined romanticism. The Ravel is equally beautiful. She is ably supported by the orchestra under John Pritchard's masterly direction and I think this is one of her very finest discs. Some critics have found the performances without sufficient drama and understanding of the poems but this has never bothered me.

Netherlands Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Hartmut Haenchen

Pentatone PTC 5186004 (recorded March 2001 in concert; this SACD release 2002)

(16bit/44.1kHz flac and scans)

Recording venue: Concertgebouw, Amsterdam
Recording engineer and Producer: Erdo Groot

As the Mahler symphonies seem to be flavour of the month on the chatbox, I thought that I would add a perhaps less well-known recording of Symphony No.5. This was one of the first 'original' recordings on the Pentatone label. At the time they were mainly reissuing Philips' surround sound recordings on SACD - the first time those recordings were issued with surround sound rather than as 2-channel.

Of course, this recording is also issued as SACD and the sound is spectacular in the Concertgebouw. Unfortunately, I do not have the means to rip the SACD layer but the CD (2-channel) layer still sounds very good.

It would be idle to pretend that the Netherlands Philharmonic of the time was the equal of the Concertgebouw Orchestra but the playing is still excellent and Haenchen offers an exciting and lithe performance with none of the dawdling in the Adagietto frequently experienced in more famous recordings.

Silverline Classics 284128-2
01. - 04. Gustav Mahler - Symphony No.6 in A minor [70'46]

Utah Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maurice Abravanel

Silverline Classics 284128-2 (recorded May/June 1974 for Vanguard Everyman; this DVD-Audio/CD issued 2003)

(24 bit/ 96 kHz flac - 2 channel - and scans)

Recording venue: Mormon Tabanacle, Salt Lake City
Recording engineer: David Baker; Producer: Seymour Solomon

Recent interest on MIMIC in the series of Mahler Symphonies recorded by Maurice Abravanel and the Utah Symphony for Vanguard in the 1960s and 1970s, prompted me to look out a couple of later issues that I have with curious double-sided discs. The first six symphonies were issued in this form but I have never seen Symphonies 7, 8 and 9.

In the case of the Mahler Symphony No.6, there is one disc with one side being the standard red-book CD (16 bit/44.1kHz) and the other side being a DVD-Audio containing a 6-channel 24 bit/96kHz version and a 2-channel 24 bit/96kHz stereo version. Here is the 24 bit/96kHz stereo version, converted from the native AOB file format to FLAC using Foobar2000 with the DVD-Audio plug-in.

This series of recordings were generally characterised as being by a less than top-level orchestra playing at the very best of their abilities under a sympathetic Mahler conductor. I find his lyrical approach rather lightweight for such a heavy symphony as the sixth but it's still superior to many later recordings and the recording quality itself is often very good although I find this one a bit thin. The sound for Symphony No.2 (which I will post next week) seems much more dynamic and full.
