London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Geoffrey Simon

Chandos CHAN8412 (recorded February 1985; this CD release 1986)

(flac and scans)

Recording venue: All Saints' Church Tooting, London
Recording engineer: Ralph Couzens; Producer: Brian Couzens

Geoffrey Simon offers exuberant performances of the overture and dances from The Bartered Bride but the primary interest is in George Szell's excellent arrangement of Smetana's first quartet for full orchestra. I generally don't care for such orchestrations, with even Rudolf Barshai's arrangements of the Shostakovich quartets disappointing, but here the arrangement seems to work very well in this fine performance.

The great Hungarian-born conductor, George Szell, loved the work and made this arrangement in 1940. He subsequently recorded it with the Cleveland Orchestra for Columbia in 1949. This was reissued by Sony in the Masterworks Heritage series as a fill-up to the Dvorak Symphonies Nos. 7, 8 & 9 and can be found on the classicalmjourney.blogspot.com blog.

Strangely, Chandos has a completely different booklet for this disc on their website and I have included that, as well as the actual booklet with this disc, in this download. Presumably they had different booklets for different markets as the one with this disc is in English only.

Recording venue: The Lady Chapel, Ely Cathedral, England
Recording engineers: Colin Moorfoot and Jack Law; Producer: Andrew Cornall

This Christmas collection has been around in a few guises over the years, variously titled The Holly and the Ivy or Carols from Clare College - not to be confused with the EMI release Christmas from Clare. Mostly arrangements of traditional carols by John Rutter or David Willcocks (featured in the Oxford University Press' volumes of Carols for Choirs) but also with a sprinkling of original compositions.

The choir is, as usual with John Rutter, quite superb although some may find his arrangements a bit too Rutter-ish.. Although not matching last year's post of the St John's College Christmas Weekend disc, it is still a favourite every Christmas in our household.

There are two generations of composers in this post and in volume #2, with Brahms and Reger as the main pillars. Dvořák and Bruch are in the older generation but they were still composing in the 20th century as you can see from Rusalka and from the Concerto for clarinet and viola. The best known works here are the piano quintets of Dvořák and Brahms, in good performances not yet appeared in Davide's Summer/Winter series. While if you are looking for a new composer try Vítězslav Novák, it might be interesting.

Total time: 76'16

(flac and scans)

Recording venue: Free Trade Hall, Manchester
Recording engineer: Mike 'Mr Bear' Clements; Producer: Barry McCann

Here's a mostly lightweight and popular collection for the holiday season. This CD release has the contents of the original CfP 'Halle Encore' LP issue with the addition of the Puccini, Giazotto and Pachelbel items from the later 'Halle Encore 2' LP issue. HIPsters should definitely avoid the latter two.

Maurice Handford was formerly the principal horn and then associate conductor of the Halle Orchestra during John Barbirolli's reign and he frequently undertook the conducting of choral and 'pops' concerts. He offers fine performances here. Notable, less-frequently performed works, include the Hamish MacCunn overture 'Land of the Mountain and the Flood' - familiar to British TV viewers in the 1970s as the theme tune for Sutherland's Law - and George Weldon's arrangement of the beautiful Welsh carol Suo Gan.

This selection is less various than volume #1, being entirely devoted to the choral works. Some are classics; others are not, like the a-cappella pieces of Josef Rheinberger (which I liked more than his organ pieces) and Richard Strauss. My bi-generational program this time is extended by the presence of the old Liszt.
