01. - 05. Gustav Mahler - Symphony No.2 in C minor [77'11]

Beverly Sills- soprano; Florence Kopleff- alto; University of Utah City Chorale; Utah Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maurice Abravanel

Silverline Classics 284221-2 (recorded April 1967 for Vanguard Everyman: this DVD-Audio/CD issued 2003)

(24 bit/ 96 kHz flac - 2 channel - and scans)

Recording venue: Mormon Tabanacle, Salt Lake City
Recording engineer: Ed Friedner; Producer: Seymour Solomon

Another in Silverline Classics' CD/DVD-Audio releases of Abravel's series of recordings of the Mahler Symphonies. This time, it is a two disc set. Side one of each of the discs contain the red-book CD version (unnecessarily split across two discs). The first DVD-Audio disc contains 24 bit/96KHz 6-channel and 2-channel versions. The second DVD-Audio disc contains a 24 bit/192KHz 2-channel version.

Even in stereo, the recording impressively reveals the hall's acoustic and this recording seems much fuller with more impact than the later recording of Symphony No.6. Abravanel's fleet and rather light-weight approach to Symphony No.2 also seems rather more successful. Both soloists are excellent - Silvery Bells' rapid vibrato is well contained and Florence Kopleff (of whom I had never previously heard) has a pure voice put to splendid effect in Urlicht.

Recording engineer and Producer: Rene Gambini

Here's an excellent and, as far as I know, unique collection of French music for clarinet and piano. The sound quality is also very fine, even from the CD layer. Although the sleeve notes include a whole page of guff extolling the virtues of  DSD over even 192kHz 24bit recording - something I feel sure many audio engineers will take issue with.

Nevertheless, it's a fine album of well-known and less well-known fare with particularly beautiful playing from Florent Heau. Anybody who has enjoyed this disc should also enjoy the pair's recording of the Brahms Clarinet Sonatas which can be downloaded from Odeon's blog.

This is playing in the grand manner... Ozawa and the orchestra are behind the soloist in all this and the deciso element is fully realized. But don't let me imply a lack of finesse; not only do lyrical sections sing with subtlety, the big passages also are shapely... In the gorgeously grisly Totentanz, both music and playing should make your hair stand on end.
C.H.; Gramophone
It is to be expected that an artist who has made one of the outstanding recordings of the Liszt concertos (DG, 11/88) should also give us one of the finest ever B minor Sonatas. Whether you think it is the finest ever may depend on your priorities (and on whether you think it is sensible to venture such opinions). What can surely be said is that Zimerman brings to bear a combination of ardour, forcefulness, drive and sheer technical grasp which are tremendously exciting and for which I can think of no direct rival.

Deutsche Grammophon 480 3303 (1976/2012) 2-Disc set

Demus recorded this in 1976 and due to space constraints of the LP, he was forced to chose the what he felt were the best. He recorded the theme, 31 variations and coda on one LP and Beethoven's 33 variations on the other. Personally, I felt he should have added a third LP to record the other 19 but at least we have this much from him.
