Here's another interesting coupling of vintage Decca recordings from their Australian branch. This was the first issue of the Ansermet on CD outside Japan and is quite a rare recording. The Maazel is, of course, much better known and has been reissued several times. Both recordings and performances are very fine with Ruggiero Ricci dazzling in the fiddle solos of Mozartiana.

Here's another example from the excellent series of recordings made by Hugh Wolff and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra for Teldec. These are punchy and witty readings of popular Bartok and Kodaly, perhaps only exceed by the finest Hungarian interpreters such as Ferenc Fricsay. But Wolff elicits an extraordinary amount of detail in the music and the recorded sound is splendidly alive and vivid.

The only strange thing here, is the disc mastering which splits the 13 minute Dances of Marosszek into 7 tracks and the 16 minute Dances from Galanta into 10 tracks. For my own use, I ripped these to one track each but for this post I have stayed with the published version.

It is not usual to see the young Handel... Anyway I'm not going to demonstrate that he has been slim. I'm sharing some of the operas premiered in his first twenty years (roughly) of career at the theatre.
I had never listened to any until recently and I decided to make this post for other beginners like me. There is much good music, even if the plot is often not so engaging.
By the way, if you happen to find the miniature shown here, give it back to the Händel-Haus in Halle where it was stolen in 1948.

These magnificent performances were recorded early in Robert Cohen's career - at the age of 21. He has been one of the UK's foremost cellists ever since. To the best of my knowledge, this was one of the first recordings of the Franck Violin Sonata played on cello. There is no transcription as such, the violin part is played but at an octave lower and the piano part is unchanged.

I have loved these performances of the Grieg and Franck sonatas since the LP was first issued; the Dvorak being added for the CD release - extracted from a set of the Dvorak Piano Trios. Bob Auger's recording balance is ideal.
