I was surprised to find that this recording may not be posted elsewhere so here it is at the request of a fellow music blogger.

This performance by the young lyric baritone, Olaf Bar, in one of his first recordings was rapturously received when first issued in 1986. Hilary Finch in Gramophone'sBest Records of 1986, wrote "Olar Bar's Schumann, eagerly awaited after his London recital, is still warm with the immediacy of a first encounter; all trace of musical cliche in Dichterliebe is eradicated as Bar's supple baritone listens acutely both here and in Eichendorf's Liederkreis to every verbal and harmonic cue."

Personally, I'm not so enthusiastic nowadays, preferring a lighter touch - but they are undoubtedly dramatic performances. I also find the recording rather close-up.

Our good friend Davide posted Previn's earlier EMI recording of Nevsky, made in 1972 with the London Symphony Orchestra and Chorus, here on MIMIC (http://meetinginmusic.blogspot.co.nz/2012/11/mad-about-bad-boy-of-russian-music_27.html) back in 2012. Some may well still prefer that somewhat rawer performance along with Anna Reynold's beautiful contribution to The Field of the Dead, but this later performance is undoubtedly more polished and Telarc's recorded sound is spectacular.

As was common back in the 1980s and earlier, there is no baritone soloist in the Kije Suite. I think that Erich Leinsdorf's recording with the Boston Symphony was the only one for many years that included the vocal parts. Nowadays, most recordings seem to include the baritone voice.

Here's another recycling of one of the many Royal Philharmonic Orchestra recordings made for their own RPO label, originally issued by Tring Records. This time it's on the minimalist budget Allegria label of Centurian/Membran - no booklet notes or recording details at all.

However, the performances are excellent and exciting. It's a rare chance of hearing the great British conductor given the opportunity to record non-British music. The Siegfried Idyll is especially fine and his Rienzi Overture is the best recording that I have heard.
