Decca Weekend 4216372
01. - 04. Felix Mendelssohn - Octet in E-flat major, op.20 [31'46]
05. - 08. Luigi Boccherini - Cello Quintet No.7 in C major, op.37 no.1 [19'39]

Academy of St Martin-in-the-Fields
(Hugh Maguire, Neville Marriner, Iona Brown & Trevor Connah- violins, Stephen Shingles & Kenneth Essex- violas, Kenneth Heath & Denis Vigay- cellos)

Decca Weekend 4216372 (recorded 1968; this CD issued 1989)

(flac and scans [such as they are])

Recording venue, engineer and producer: Not disclosed

Here's another "bare-bones" release in Decca's early budget Weekend series. Posted here at the request of a MIMIC reader, there are no production details nor sleeve notes at all - not even listing who the players are in the Boccherini. The original recording for Argo - released on LP in 1968 with the last movement of the Octet relegated to side 2 - has subsequently turned up on at least two other CD releases; for Decca Originals and Decca Eloquence in Australia. The re-releases probably provide decent sleeve notes and are 24 bit remasters but the sound on this release is fine to my ears.

These were considered outstanding recordings in their day and came as a breath of fresh air. The recording was made in the earlier days of the Academy when most of the players were still, or recently had been, prominent players in the London Symphony Orchestra with concertmaster Hugh Maguire and principal second violin, Neville Marriner. If you don't have an intolerance of their modern instruments and ebullient performance style, they probably haven't been subsequently bettered.

SACD ISO & Flac Rip - Deutsche Grammophon 477 5397 (2004)

Our esteemed fellow blogger ytsejamer05 was generous enough to share the LP of the Barenboim Saint-Saens 3rd!  Here is another take on the same topic!

No doubt he was disappointed that CDs didn't deliver on the promise they were touted with on arrival.  I too was disappointed that the early CDs sounded at best flat and lifeless, at worst shrill and almost completely unlistenable. But for me the surface noise on LPs ruined any other gains, and so I suffered. But to my ears what is available in modern high resolution recordings/masterings holds out some promise for the future! I wouldn't hold out this Barenboim recording as a special one sonically; but I've always loved the performance! Listen for yourself and decide.

I have included an ISO file extracted from the SACD and a 24/96 flac file extracted from the ISO.  If you don't know how to play ISO files from SACDs, Foobar2000 has plugins for most hi-res files. Do a Google search for "Foobar 2000 sacd iso decoder" and you should get what you need.  The 24/96 flac file can easily be down-converted to 16 bit using Foobar2000 if that's what you really want (just be sure to check the "always dither" option).

As some of you may know, until recently the only way to extract the hi-res layer from SACDs was using old XBox Play Station 3 game consoles. Recently I came across a script that allows extraction from newer stand-alone Blu-Ray players such as Oppo and Marantz.  I am trying to extract my library which runs to about 800 titles. If there is a positive response to this, I might be encouraged to post some more of these.

Felicity Lott*- soprano, L'Orchestre de la Suisse Romande conducted by Armin Jordan

FNAC Music 592297 (recorded January 1994; this CD issued 1994)

(flac and scans)

Recording venue: Victoria Hall, Geneva
Recording engineer: Jean-Martial Golaz; Producer: Michel Garcin

This recording made in a sort of Viennese New Year's concert in Geneva was little known in its original issue on the short-lived French FNAC label but has subsequently been reissued a few times including by Virgin Classics in 2005. It is typical New Year fare with popular orchestral pieces interspersed with arias from operettas; sometimes transposed for the soprano voice. The first half being Viennese and the second half French makes the disc's tile somewhat curious.

Flott is her usual beguiling and charming self and Armin Jordan gets vivid sprightly performances from his orchestra. The wonderful acoustic of the Victoria Hall and expert engineering add to the pleasure of this light-hearted disc.

EMI CDC7494712 (recorded June 1988; this CD issued 1988)

(flac and scans)

Recording venue: Halle aux Grains, Toulouse
Recording engineer: Daniel Michel; Producer: Alain Lanceron

Here's a mix of familiar piano scores in sensitive orchestrations by other composers, important orchestral scores and minor, if entertaining, ephemera all expertly played by that quintessentially French orchestra. Plasson adopts the essential straight-face and doesn't overdo the occasional lunacy.

Fine recorded sound but a disc that is probably best dipped into rather than played straight through.
