09. - 22. Camille Saint-Saens - Le Carnaval des animaux [21'51]
The Nash Ensemble (Ian Brown & Susan Tomes- piano; Marcya Crayford & Jeremy William- violin; Roger Chase- viola; Christpher van Kampen- cello; Rodney Slatford- double-bass; William Bennett- flute; Michael Collins- clarinet; Paul Archibald- trumpet; David Corkhill & Terry Emery- percussion)
Virgin 5615162 (recorded March 1988; this CD release 1998)
(flac and scans)
Recording venue: All Saints' Church, Petersham
Recording engineer: Trygg Tryggvason; Produder: Martin Compton
Here's a fine twofer of popular chamber works by Dvorak and Saint-Saens in expert performances by The Nash Ensemble - brilliant and wonderfully polished. Ian Brown and Christopher van Kampen are outstanding in the Dvorak Quintet.
This performance of Carnival of the Animals is particularly vivacious and sparkling with Ian Brown being joined by Susan Tomes, from the Florestan Trio, as the piano duo.
The recording offers a natural concert hall acoustic with the veteran engineer Trygg Tryggvason working his usual magic.

Cesar Franck: My organ is my orchestra
I grew up with the organ music of Cesar Franck, especially with the recordings of Jeanne Demessieux.
My father visited a concert of her in the sixties and bought the four famous Decca LP's, which I still posses.
So, the readings of Demessieux became my reference and till today, nobody played the works of the famous Belgian composer with such poetry and power, when needed. In the nineties the Dutch label Festivo transferred the recordings to CD.

A real 'must have' for everyone, who likes these organ works!

There are a couple Couperin's boxset around, even on this blog, but this one box seems a bit harder to find, hence why not upload it? Quite the big upload/download. I've deciced to split into small 200mb parts to allow people with not so good connection an easy download (you wouldnt want to re-download a 1gb file). Would there be any problem with the download or the files please let me know.

Recording venue: Barking Town Hall & St Augustine's Church, London
Recording engineer: Tony Faulkner; Producer: Christopher Palmer
Here's another excellent Elgar twofer from Warner/Teldec's series of recordings of British music with Andrew Davis and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. Here again, the superb recording quality is provided by the Tony Faulkner and Christopher Palmer team with near-perfect balances. It's interesting to compare this issue with Tony Faulkner's later recordings of the two symphonies with Andrew's namesake Colin Davis for the LSO label. The latter are quite awful sounding in comparison. It seems that even a great engineer such as Tony Faulkner can't do anything with the Barbican's acoustic.
The performances remain among the finest available and only rarely challenged in later recordings- only Sakari Oramo in Stockholm and Daniel Barenboim in Berlin come to mind.
