Sony Essential Classics SBK87967 (recorded November 1966 and January & March 1967 (Quartets); February 1964 & May 1968; this CD issued 2001)

(flac and scans)

Recording venue: Columbia 30th Street Studio, NYC (Juilliard Quartet) and Town Hall, Philadelphia
Recording engineers and producers: not disclosed

This is a slightly curious combination of works - as though the producer couldn't find anything more suitable in Columbia/Sony's vast archive to accompany the two Ives Quartets. Nevertheless, they are all fine performances of early editions and Ormandy leads one of the most humourous performances of the Variations on America that I know.

Although not great masterpieces, the two quartets show two distinct sides to the composer. The early First Quartet is typically based on popular hymn tumes - the first movement was later re-worked in the Fourth Symphony. The mature Second Quartet is more intense and exploratory. The Juilliard's performances of both quartets are landmark and definitive and these were among the work's earliest recordings.

(flac&scans)

This edition of Mozart's Idomeneo is an adaptation published by Richard Strauss in 1930. It is an extraordinary document, that should not be read philologically by having Mozart's original in mind, which would not make sense, but rather as a unique testimony of a taste often found in the early 20th Century music, and which purports to compare the modern lesson with the revered tradition of the past. Other outstanding examples of this approach are Gluck's Iphigénie en Tauride again by Strauss and Carl Orff's edition of Monteverdi's Orfeo. In other words, it is a certain 20th Century musical world which - by following Wagner's footsteps - brings back to life the great tradition of musical drama by adapting it to its aesthetics and language.

Decca 4403132 (recorded July 1992; this USA CD release by BMG on London label 1993)

(flac and scans)

Recording venue: Mozarteum Orchesterhaus, Salzburg
Recording engineer: John Pellowe; Producer: Michael Woolcock

This fairly rare CD was intended to be one of a series of recordings associated with Andras Schiff's Mondsee Festival in Austria. In the event, only a few releases saw the light of day and this one was issued in the USA by BMG in some sort of direct marketing operation. The recordings are actually 'studio' and not made live at the festival.

This recording of On an Overgrown Path preceded his better-known recordings for ECM and the make up of the ensemble appeared to be eminently suitable for Janacek's music. The performance of the Concertino is particularly effective.

01. - 04. Erich Wolfgang Korngold - Piano Trio, op.1 [26'00]
05. - 07. Charles Ives - Piano Trio [23'22]

Pacific Art Trio (Alice Shapiro- piano; Israel Baker- violin; Edgar Lustgarten- cello)

Delos D/CD1009 (recording date: not disclosed; CD issued 1987)

(flac and scans)

Recording venue, engineer and producer: not disclosed.

Ives' and Korngold's Trios are close contemporaries - composed in 1911 and 1910 respectively. The Ives Trio is an undoubted masterpiece which has numerous recordings. The second movement scherzo is characteristically subtitled 'TSIAJ' ( This Scherzo Is A Joke).

Korngold was only 12 years old when he completed his op.1. Although no masterpiece, it is an astonishing achievement for such a young musician.

Delos are strangely silent on the provenance of this fine recording and performance and Harold Truscott's notes are very enthusiastic. Although not the best known of Piano Trios, its violinist Israel Baker is perhaps best known as a Hollywood studio session musician - he led the screaming violins in Bernard Hermann's Psycho score and also led the Columbia Symphony for many years.
