This wonderful performance and recording of Job was first issued on EMI's Eminence label and was posted here on MIMIC by Scoredaddy back in January 2009. However, the links on that post appear to be dead so it seemed worthwhile to make it available again - and in this reissue on Classics for Pleasure it is accompanied by Handley's early recording of the Tallis Fantasia - much nore measured and grander than his later recording in Liverpool. For me, this recording of Job has only been seriously challenged by Adrian Boult's early (1959) stereo recording with the same orchestra for Everest, although some may be put off by the then cavernous acoustic of the Royal Albert Hall.
This recording by Vernon Handley was subsequently packaged together, by Classics for Pleasure, with Handley's equally fine cycle of the Vaughan Williams symphonies with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and those recordings of the symphonies have subsequently appeared in EMI's large Vaughan Williams Collectors Edition. But for some reason, EMI substituted Boult's later, and inferior, EMI recording of Job.
For completeness, I have also included a download of Boult's Everest recording of Job (not my rip - thanks to the original uploader). This comes coupled with The Wasps Overture, recorded in the same location, and Malcolm Arnold's definitive 1959 recording of his Four Scottish Dances, also with the London Philharmonic, (Everest EVC9006).

For harpsichord-lovers the thing to get from this one is especially the Kuhnau, which is very rarely recorded. Also, if you don't know BWV 904, this is a nice performance. Although I have to say for me the Fantasia is perfect for the organ, while the Fugue suits harpsichord the best :-)

Here's another from the series of British music recorded by Andrew Davis and the BBC Symphony in the 1990s. This remains one of my favourite recordings of The Planets (after Adrian Boult with the London Phil. and Zubin Mehta with the LA Phil.). The recorded sound is stunning and I much prefer this to Davis' later Chandos recording with the BBC Philharmonic. The wonderful Egdon Heath provides an excellent fill-up.
The inlay card suggests that Andrew Davis also plays the organ of King's College Cambridge throughout The Planets. Although he was an organ scholar and member of the King's College Choir in his earlier career, I find this statement to be unlikely!

Here's an attractive short collection of a number of Holst's most popular works, again recorded in the favourite acoustic of St Augustine's. Holst was a long-time music teacher at St Paul's Girls School near Brook Green in Hammersmith and the Brook Green Suite was written for their junior orchestra.
At this stage of his career, Menuhin was a rather more accomplished conductor than violinist and he serves up lively and affectionate performances. The flute and oboe soloists are particularly fine in the Fugal Concerto. I see that this CD is currently trading on Amazon for $90.00!
