FRANZ JOSEPH HAYDN - QUARTETS OP. 33, 42 & 54
Heinz Oberdorfer, violin
Ferdinand Erblich, viola
Michael Müller, cello
The Orlando Quartet was formed in 1976. After the leader, István Párkányi, left in 1985, the Orlando journeyed on without him until 1997.
In 1998 three original members were joined by cellist Michael Müller to form the Párkányi String Quartet.
So they're not in step with the period instrument movement: they simply make great music together! The Op. 54 disc was recorded in Prague on 17-19 May, 2010.
The first Op. 33 offering (2, 3 & 5) is from 2007, recorded in Prague on 4-7, July.
The balance of Op. 33 (1, 4 & 6) along with Op. 42 was recorded, again in Prague, two years later on 2-5 June, 2009.
These are all Apple lossless files, with full covers and notes.

G.F. Händel - Harpsichord Suites
Georg Friedrich Händel (23 February 1685 (O.S.) [(N.S.) 5 March] – 14 April 1759)
"Handel is the greatest composer who ever lived. I would bare my head and kneel at his grave."
Ludwig van Beethoven, 1824
As a young man, Handel’s entree into high society and the company of other gifted musicians was his astonishing talent for improvisation.
Besides the improvisation of fantasies, fugues and variations, Handel’s own keyboard works must have formed a major part of his repertoire at that time. Whether he composed these works first, or wrote them down shortly after initial improvisation in public, is not clear. In any case, by the time he was properly established in his next major port of call (London, 1710, after a short stop at the court of Hanover), Handel’s keyboard oeuvre was substantial, and by about 1717, virtually complete.
For reasons unknown, some years went by before Handel got around to publishing his keyboard works. In fact, only in response to an unauthorized Netherlands/English edition (the so-called “Roger/Walsh” print), did he release his first set of harpsichord works - the [8] Suites de Pièces pour le Clavecin... (London, 1720).
But some clouds indeed have silver linings. In this case, the very fact that he had been pirated in the first place was proof that he had “arrived”, so to speak, as a successful composer.
Handel had no way of controlling the activities of foreign publishers such as Jeanne Roger, the Netherlands half of the Roger/Walsh pirate operation; but he eventually struck a deal with Roger’s English partner, John Walsh. By 1733, with the publication of the [9] Suites de Pièces pour le Clavecin... Second Volume, Walsh had become Handel’s regular publisher - but not before he appears to have robbed the composer at least one more time with a pirated edition in 1727!
Sorting through and evaluating the 17 works in the two keyboard volumes for their exact chronological and thematic provenances would be a complicated task. The order and distribution of the suites between the Volume One (1720) and Volume Two (1733) is arbitrary, and reflects nothing of the history of their composition. Volume Two, for example, was merely a further issue of older works which could as easily have found their way into Volume One. Like many prolific composers of the eighteenth century, Handel revised, mixed, remixed, reordered and recycled his works so often as to defy retracing.

And, finally, here you can find the Trevor Pinnock's CD.

Recording engineer: Ralph Couzens; Producer: Brian Couzens
Here is a multi-faceted portrayal of the sea under the direction of that master of British music, Vernon Handley. I know of no other recording of the Four Sea Interludes and Passacaglia that excels this performance in terms of interpretation, playing and recorded sound. Handley's Storm is almost as terrifying as Eduard van Beinum's mono recording. The Ulster Orchestra play their hearts out for Handley.
Britten's teacher, Frank Bridge's Suite The Sea is a masterly representation of the sea in all of its moods and whilst I am not normally a great fan of Bax's music, he seems to be at his best in sea-related compositions and the rarely-played On the Sea Shore is no exception.
I am also usually no fan of Chandos' big, blowsy house sound, but the acoustic of the Ulster Hall seems to suit them perfectly and there is no lack of detail in the excellent recorded sound here.

Warner Apex's characteristically minimalist booklet excels this time by not even listing the members of the New Helsinki Quartet giving these excellent performances for the Finlandia label. I understand that the Quartet is actually made up of principals of the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra; formed in 1982 and was winner of the London International String Quartet Competition in 1994. Members that I have found listed are Petri Aarnio and Taija Kilpio- violins, Ilari Angervo- viola and Joel Laakso- cello although I have no way of knowing if this is the team for this recording.
I have enjoyed these enthusiastic and intense performances over many years. They seem particularly appropriate for these two lyrical quartets.

Here's an excellent introduction to the music of Villa-Lobos with four of his most popular orchestral works - although you would never know it from the hopeless Apex booklet which is seemingly almost unrelated to the music on this disc. Krivine and his Lyon orchestra offer deep commitment to the music and surprising virtuosity. Krivine, assisted by the fine recorded sound, is very good at clarifying the often complex textures and even the unusual phono-fiddle can be heard in Amazonas. And nowhere in the booklet or track listing would you know that the Toccata finale of Bachianas Brasileiras No.2 is also Trenzino do Caipira - the musical gem depictiing a small steam train. Roberto Aussel is an excellent soloist in the Guitar Concerto and Maria Bayo is also very fine in Bachinas Brasileiras No.5 although a little too far forward in the mix.
05. - 06. Heitor Villa-Lobos - Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5* [10'46]
07. - 09. Heitor Villa-Lobos - Concerto for Guitar# [18'17]
10. Heitor Villa-Lobos - Amazonas* [11'53]
Orchestre National de Lyon conducted by Emmanuel Krivine with Maria Bayo*- soprano and Roberto Aussel#- guitar.
