Despite the naff title - wot no Romeo and Juliet or Cinderella - this is a compilation of top-draw recordings issued by EMI's Dutch offshoot Disky. Appearing to be aimed at the Supermarket / Gas Station market, this copy came from a local discount warehouse's bargain bin. But the cover and packaging belies an excellent collection of popular music from ballets in vital performances with classic recordings mastered for CD by EMI in the early 1990s.
It is interesting to see that making recordings with a prominent star player in solos normally capably handled by the orchestra's principals was already in place in 1958. One wonders just what the Philharmonia's leader thought here. And I find Beecham here to be the least impressive of the group.
