Aulis Sallinen:
01. - 08. Elaman ja kuoleman lauluja 'Songs Of Life And Death', op.69 [46'55]
09. - 15. Rauta-aika 'The Iron Age'. Suite, op.55# [28'23]

Jorma Haininen- baritone*, Margit Papunen- soprano#, Opera Festival Chorus, East Helsinki Music Institute Choir#, Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Okko Kamu

Ondine ODE844-2 (recorded January 1995; CD issued 1995)

(digital download; flacs, cover and inlay scans, no booklet provided)

Recording venue: Finlandia Hall, Helsinki
Recording engineer: Enno Mäemets; Producer: Seppo Siirala

Another terrific pair of performances and recordings of the music of Aulis Sallinen kindly provided by friend Howard. It is particular unfortunate that the main work, the song cycle for baritone, chorus, and orchestra Songs of Life and Death - music described by the distinguished American music writer Henry Fogel has described as "one of Sallinen's most important works" - has commercial digital downloads missing the detailed booklet notes and texts. It is very sad to see the usually exemplary Ondine label join EMI/Warner, Sony/BMG and Universal Music in this contempt for their audience.

Both works are written in Sallinen's most accessible voice. The very powerful song cycle, using texts specially written by Lassi Nummi, Songs of Life and Death is in effect Sallinen's Requiem Mass. It has also been quite accurately described as the choral and orchestral masterpiece that Sibelius should have written. The work was completed in 1994 and this recording (so far the only recording) was made shortly after its premiere by the same forces. To quote Fogel again "This is music (and poetry) of immense humanity, dealing with, as Sallinen himself says, the inseparability of life and death, death's harshness and beauty."

The Iron Age Suite is drawn from music that Sallinen wrote for a television documentary series in the early 1980s and although it is much more lightweight than Songs of Life and Death, it is very attractive music and I imagine that it must have aptly accompanied the visual images.Although I have no knowledge of the actual subjects of the documentaries, some of the titles are eerily reminisent of Sibelius' Lemminkainen Suite -  Lemminki and the Maidens of the Island and Lemminki in Tuonela for instance.

The recorded sound is excellent and the performances of both works is absolutely first-rate. Sallinen's champion, Okko Kamu, leads intense and committed performances from the choral and orchestral forces with the great baritone Jorma Hynninen at his very best here. Because there is no information provided with this digital download, I have included a copy of Henry Fogel's perceptive review for Fanfare Magazine in the download.

Recording venues: not given (Symphony 6); Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool (Symphony 8)
Recording engineers and producers: not given

Here are two significant recordings of performances by great supporters of the composer - the Symphony No.8 being of the work's world premiere performance given on 5 August 1971 (three years after it was composed). Neither conductor recorded these works commercially and these are both in-concert recordings. The Italy-based 'pirate' label did not have a good reputation for recording quality but these two recordings are surprisingly acceptable although not of studio quality for the period and no match for Norman Del Mar's similar coupling for Lyrita. I am most grateful to a friend for sending me this rip from CD.

The performance of the Sixth symphony under Sir Adrian is arguably the finest of the work issued as a recording - with the majestic finale having just the right tempo. The symphony was given its premiere by the BBC Symphony under Malcolm Sargent in 1954 and it is probably my favourite of Rubbra's symphonies.

Sir Charles delivers a powerful premiere of the eighth symphony but the orchestral playing is a bit rough and less secure than the Royal Philharmonic for Sir Adrian. (Perhaps insufficient rehearsal time for a difficult new work?) The subject of the symphony's title, Chardin, was a twentieth-century Jesuit paleoanthropologist "whose theory of evolution included non-living nature as profound history and that man, a material system within other material systems, experiences his own individual consciousness as 'spiritual energy'." So, there - but the work does indeed have a sense of calm spirituality, in line with Rubbra's deep religious convictions.

EDUARDO MATA (5/IX/1942 † 4/I/1995)
On January 4, 1995, 52-year old mexican conductor Eduardo Mata was killed when the plane he was flying went down near Cuernavaca Airport, outside his home of Xochitepec, México. He was accompanied by dear friend and companion Marina Anaya who was also killed in the crash. Maestro Mata was a consummate musician, hailed internationally as a conductor of the first rank, and was deeply respected by colleagues, contemporaries and friends as a man of great elegance, warmth and generosity.

As a music director of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra from 1977 to 1993, Eduardo Mata is credited as the driving force which led the orchestra to new standards of excellence, and world recognition. He was actively involved in the acoustic development of the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center, which opened in 1989 and is regarded as one of the finest concert venues in North America. At the time of his death, Eduardo Mata held the title of Conductor Emeritus for Life of the Dallas Symphony, principal Guest Conductor of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra, principal Guest Conductor and artistic advisor of the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar of Venezuela (Caracas), and the Artistic Director of Solistas de México.

He also maintained close and actived artistic relationships with the Pittsburgh Symphony, San Francisco Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra, Rome Radio Orchestra, Canada's National Arts Center Orchestra and the Rotterdam Philharmonic. An equally important and increasingly recognized aspect of Eduardo Mata's artistic life was his work as a tireless champion of Latin American Concert Music. Mtro. Mata leaves behind him a distinguished discography for such labels as BMG/RCA, Angel/EMI, ProArte, Telarc and Vox Cum Laude.

Recording engineers & Producers: not stated

Given the numerous ways that Rachmaninov's surname can be transliterated from the cyrillic, Nimbus' choice of Rakhmaninov seems the most eccentric. Nimbus recorded the concertos and rhapsody in ambisonic surround-sound and some may be troubled by the reverberation of the deep sound-stage, even in this two-channel issue, but I didn't find it intrusive.

Others may find these performances just too sober. John Lill (co-winner of the 1970 International Tchaikovsky Competition with Vladimir Krainev) provides a big-boned interpretation of all the works although he can be a bit literal and 'safe' at times. He is certainly no real match for Earl Wild (still my favourite set), Vladimir Ashkenazy (in either of his sets) or Stephen Hough. However, this is preferable in my view to the so many flashy and neurotic performances by big-name virtuosi.

Lill is ably abetted in the concerted works by Tadaaki Otaka and the orchestra. A little earlier, they made an excellent, if little mentioned, set of recordings of the Rachmaninov symphonies, the orchestra then being known as the BBC Welsh Symphony. Only the second concerto is a bit too drawn out for my taste. In the third concerto, Lill plays the big cadenza.

The performance of the second sonata, curiously sandwiched between the fourth concerto and the Paganini rhapsody, is majestic and quite fine. Although the booklet notes for the second sonata infer that Lill plays the 1931 revised version, he actually plays the larger original.

PS. At around the time of the last of these recordings, John Lill was rumoured to have made recordings of Edmund Rubbra's Piano Concerto and Sinfonia concertante with Tod Handley for Conifer Classics, not long before they ceased trading. I have never seen any evidence of them having been issued but if anybody knows anything different, please let me know. It would be great to have these issued along with Tasmin Little's recording of the Violin Concerto, also with Handley for Conifer. That recording was actually made and briefly appeared on CD, but nothing since.
