Of all the discs in my bronze series, this one is the worst. Other discs may have tracks that cannot be ripped in secure mode but at least they can all still be played. This disc is so badly bronzed, that tracks 16-21 are no longer playable. Needless to say I could not rip these tracks and I was only able to make EAC rips of tracks 1-15. Big thanks to member Carbozie who supplied EAC rips for tracks 16-21.

These recordings made when she was in her late 70s, fairly represent the subtle and distinctive playing of Dame Moura Lympany and Debussy's extraordinary pianism. Pure pleasure from beginning to end. Moura Lympany was a great virtuoso throughout her life from youth to old age and just a few slips show up here. She clearly loved what she played and wanted to display it in its best light.
Unfortunately, CfPs curiously bland booklet notes do not do the recording justice.

Recording venue: RCA Studios, New York
Recording engineer: John Kurlander; Producer: John Fraser
During the late 1980s and early 1990s, EMI-Angel issued a series of music theater and associated recordings directed by the great music theater archivist, John McGlinn. He was one of the principal proponents of authentic studio cast recordings of Broadway musicals, using original orchestrations and vocal arrangements. The series started with a disc of Gershwin songs with Kiri Te Kanawa and this recording of Gershwin Overtures performed in period style - using a pit-size pickup band of New York musicians.
The series proceeded with complete musicals by Jerome Kern, Gershwin, Cole Porter and many others; all using period scores. Probably the best remembered is the complete Show Boat starring Frederica von Stade, Bruce Hubbard and Teresa Stratas and lasting almost four hours. McGlinn's EMI recording contract was not renewed in 1992 and he died in 2009 at the young age of 55.

Unfortunately, here in New Zealand the thought police (in the form of the Human Rights Commissioner - a former international squash player) has decreed that the term Christmas should not be used and that the wishing of Merry Christmas is inappropriate. Of course, quite rightly, it is still okay to celebrate Diwali, Hannukah, Eid al Fitr, etc. Only the religion of 60% of our population is discriminated against. And just try to find a religious Chritmas Card for sale anywhere.
Nevertheless, the 'go-to' disc in this household when we want to listen to Christmas songs and carols is still this wonderfully-sung collection by the Choir of St John's College, Cambridge under the direction of George Guest. It is interesting to note that the boy choristers at the time included Simon Keenleyside and Robert King. The selection of songs and carols could hardly be bettered and the singing of the exquisite Welsh carol Suo Gan (made internationally famous in Empire of the Sun) is sublime.

Vaughan Williams - The Haitink Cycle (Originals)
The accomplished composer from Gloucestershire will hardly go down in the history of music as an innovator, yet, his symphonic work is masterfully crafted and well worth our attention.
Of the few complete recordings available, I've always liked Haitink's endeavour best, as the great Dutch Maestro does not indulge too much in the Englishness of this music, thereby elevating its quality and calibre to gain a broader and diverse audience.
This cycle, recorded over a period of 15 years and later remastered and re-issued by EMI as a box-set, is here offered in its individual original and untouched CD releases.
