Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky:
01. - 03. Violin Concerto in D major, op.35 [35'01]
04. Souvenir d’un lieu cher, op.42 - No. 3 Melodie (arr. Glazunov) [4'14]
Tossy Spivakovsky- violin, London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Walter Goehr
Everest SDBR 3049 (recorded November 1959; LP issued October 1960; digital download 2006)
(digital downloads, 16bit/44.1kHz flacs, booklet and cover scans)
Recording venue: Walthamstow Assembly Hall, London
Recording engineers: Aaron Nathanson & Bert Whyte; Producer: Bert Whyte
This is the last issue from my collection of Everest digital remasters (this one from Countdown Media) that I am able to post here. I also have the excellent Eugene Goossens/London Symphony recording of Rachmaninov's Symphonic Dances but that was from a private group.
As mentioned in my earlier post of the altogether superior Spivakovsky recording of the Sibelius Violin Concerto made at the same time (but with Tauno Hannikainen as conductor), this is rather less successful to my ears but it is a notable performance in its own right. Spivakovsky has all of the virtuosity required for the solo instrument and many reviewers have felt more highly of the performance than I do. There seems to me to be a lack of panache in this performance but, nevertheless, the superb recording quality is ample compensation for any doubts about the performance itself.
Appendix: Since preparing this post, I have noticed that Thang Nguyen has a high resolution version of this release on his blog at classicalpippo9.com. I'm not sure if it is the same remastering.
