Dmitri Shostakovich (arr. Rudolf Barshai):
01. - 05. Chamber Symphony in C minor, op.110a (from String Quartet No.8) [22'45]
06. - 09. Symphony for Strings in A-flat major, op.118a (from String Quartet No.10) [25'45]
Phoenix Chamber Orchestra conducted by Julian Bigg
Trax Classique TRXCD 110 (recorded December 1983 and issued in 1984 on Phoenix label; this CD release 1988)
(flac and scans)
Recording venue: Somewhere in London
Recording engineer: Anthony Howell; Producer: Mark Brown
At the time that it was first released, this recording by a fairly obscure group of performers was possibly the first of the two arrangements of Shostakovich string quartets that Rudolf Barshai had then completed and its reissue on a fairly obscure CD label was certainly the first to couple the two together on one CD. Hence the title The Two Chamber Symphonies. Barshai has, of course, subsequently added three more to these two.
Although I much prefer the works played in the original quartet format, these are very competent arrangements (approved by the composer) with a quite large body of strings in these performances. Engineer and producer were stalwarts of many IMP/Carlton Classics recordings.
