Here's a mostly lightweight and popular collection for the holiday season. This CD release has the contents of the original CfP 'Halle Encore' LP issue with the addition of the Puccini, Giazotto and Pachelbel items from the later 'Halle Encore 2' LP issue. HIPsters should definitely avoid the latter two.
Maurice Handford was formerly the principal horn and then associate conductor of the Halle Orchestra during John Barbirolli's reign and he frequently undertook the conducting of choral and 'pops' concerts. He offers fine performances here. Notable, less-frequently performed works, include the Hamish MacCunn overture 'Land of the Mountain and the Flood' - familiar to British TV viewers in the 1970s as the theme tune for Sutherland's Law - and George Weldon's arrangement of the beautiful Welsh carol Suo Gan.
