This was one of the first recordings of On Wenlock Edge that I got to know, back in the 1970s, and it remains my favourite. At the time, all recordings were in this original version with string quartet and piano but nowadays, the orchestral version seems to have become the more popular.
This disc is replicated in EMI's giant Vaughan Williams Collector's Edition boxed set but this single disc comes with excellent notes by Michael Kennedy and the printed lyrics. Ian Partridge's performances are treasurable throughout as are the accompaniments - Janet Craxton's oboe makes the Blake Songs more ear-pleasing than usual.
Superb recorded sound from EMI's golden age.
