This collection of "bleeding chunks" from Strauss' most popular opera took a long time to appear for this first time on CD - although it has since appeared on the Australian Eloquence label. It remains one of the most desirable collections of "highlights" with Silvio Varviso's elegant and ardent conducting and wonderful performances from the three sopranos. Regine Crespin, one of the finest ever Marschallins, is in finer voice than in her later complete recording with Solti. And it is also good to have a soprano Octavian as Strauss intended.

Fine period Decca sound adds to the enjoyment of this disc and only the absence of sung texts detracts.
