This was Barbirolli's last complete concert and his last conducting Elgar, held as part of the King's Lynn Festival. He died just five days later. The all-Elgar concert opened with the Introduction and Allegro followed by Sea Pictures and Symphony No1. Following Intaglio's release in 1991. the BBC issued their transfers in their BBC Legends series in 2002.
Both the Intaglio and the BBC Legends issues of the symphony sound much the same to my ears. Excepting there is a rapid cut off after the last chord in the Intaglio issue to avoid the applause. I have included both issues so that you have the complete concert.
I would also note that Intaglio mis-spelled the name of the Swedish mezzo as Kirstin Meyer.
