With the death of Peter Sculthorpe, Carl Vine is probably Australia's leading composer - certainly the most significant. Here is a fine collection of his chamber works.
Unusually for a contemporary work, his Piano Sonata No.2 rapidly became well-known in the UK - primarily because it was set for piano grade examinations of the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music. It is a masterpiece, particularly in this breathtaking performance by Michael Kieran Harvey in the work's premier recording for Belinda Webster's one-woman label.
Both of Vine's piano sonatas are major additions to the piano repertoire. A performance of Vine's Piano Sonata No.1, played by Sergei Babayan, has been posted here earlier on MIMIC by friend Davide (http://meetinginmusic.blogspot.co.nz/2014/09/summer-nights-9.html).
The String Quartet No.3 is also a wonderful work which should be better known. It receives an enthralling performance from the ad hoc quartet.
