Unusual to see a recording of works by Peter Sculthorpe on the Chandos label - I think this is the only one. I have added this recording to my Australian Composers folder as I was mistaken in thinking it was available from a number of download sources. It also contains a recording of a work not already in the folder - Irkanda I for solo violin. Tognetti and the Australian Chamber Orchestra had previously made recordings for ABC Classics in 1996 of Irkanda IV, Sonata for Strings No.2 and Lament [these recordings are already in the download folder] and there is little to choose between them.

Irkanda II and Irkanda III were withdrawn by the composer as he was dissatisfied with them. Irkanda II  (also known as the String Quartet No.5 - some of the music was reworked into Irkanda IV) and the first movement of Irkanda III was transformed into From Irkanda III for piano trio. I have included a digital download of that work performed by the Australian Seraphim Trio and taken from a 5 CD set of piano trio recordings issued a bit too recent to post here now.

I have also included this early Sculthorpe disc which includes the composer playing in the piano duets and all but one of these works, Djilile, are not already included in the download folder in these arrangements. Australia's Musica Viva is the world's largest presenter of chamber music and Carl Vine was its Artistic Director from 2000 to 2019. This issue was recorded and produced by Tall Poppies' Belinda Webster (who commissioned this arrangement of the Song of  Tailitnama) before she set up her own record label. Both Mountains and Landscape II are fine examples of Sculthorpe's visually representative style. In perhaps the most important work in this set, Requiem for solo cello, David Pereira draws the most amazing range of sounds from his cello.
