Czech Philharmonic Orchestra
Myung-Whun Chung
Exton 2015
Chung's interpretation is both strong and Romantic. This is one of the best recordings of this symphony done in the modern era. This is one of the few post WWII Brahms recordings which nails the emotional content of the music and allows it to grow organically. Chung's tempi are flexible, and he allows each line in the texture time to breathe while keeping things moving. The scherzo, in particular, is brisk, and full of imaginative details. The balances in the orchestra are very good, and textures are clear and warm at the same time. The wonderful playing reminds one this is the orchestra Talich built. Chung's recording fits into the tradition of excellence for which this orchestra is known./Amazon review)
