Recording venue: Tapiola Hall, Espoo, Finland
Recording engineer: Matti Heinonen; Producer: Michael Ponder
This desirable collection from Naxos gathers together all of Sallinen's music for strings written up to the recording date. One of Sallinen's more popular works, in this 1981 orchestration, the haunting third quartet is a set of variations on a traditional Finnish fiddle tune. Equally familiar is the"aging composer's farewell to youth"Chamber Music III - a set of parodies of popular songs and dances - almost a cello concerto.
These performances are all very fine as may be expected from Sallinen devotee, Okko Kamu, and the recording quality is excellent. This recording of Sunrise Serenade is the same as the one included in Finnish Orchestral Favourites (posted here on MIMIC last week) and Naxos' booklet again remains silent on the identities of the two prominent trumpeters.
