The Swedish composer Franz Berwald (1796 - 1868) composed his four delightful and innovative numbered symphonies in the early 1840s. The first complete set as far as I know was recorded by EMI in 1976 with Ulf Bjorlin and the Royal Philharmonic and was followed by the first digital set made by Neeme Jarvi and the Gothenberg Symphony in 1985 (to be found on a number of download sites). The three sets featured here appeared in relatively swift succession after that. There is also a set recorded by BIS in 1996 with Sixten Ehrling and the Malmo Symphony but I have never seen nor heard that. Since Thomas Dausgaard's set recorded in the early noughties there has been nothing further (although an obscure set by David Montgomery and the Jena Symphony was issued by Arte Nova around the same time as Dausgaard's second disc).
All three of these sets are excellent but if pushed to select a favourite it would be for Okko Kamu's with the Helsingborg orchestra. That set also includes the Piano Concerto which, unfortunately, exhibits a lower level of invention than the symphonies. Roy Goodman's set has the advantage of including the remaining fragment of an earlier Symphony in A major.
