01. - 06. Bedrich Smetana - Ma Vlast. Symphonic Poems 'My Country' [75'45]
St Louis Symphony Orchestra conducted by Walter Susskind
Mobile Fidelity UDSACD 4006 (recorded January 1975; originally issued as Vox Turnabout quadraphonic LPs. This SACD issue 2004)
(rip from SACD; 24bit/88.2kHz stereo flacs, booklet, cover and inlay scans)
Recording venue: not given
Recording engineer: Marc Aubort; Producer: Johanna Nickrenz (Elite Recordings)
Although this high-resolution production has been available at a number of download sites, none seem to be currently active so I have posted it here. This a stereo rip from SACD (not my rip, many thanks to the original uploader) and, of course, the surround sound has not been preserved.
The recording was made by the legendary Aubort/Nickrenz team - who made numerous recordings for Vox and EMI using minimal microphone techniques which (as in this case) resulted in excellent sound recordings.
The Czech-born conductor, Walter Susskind spent most of his life conducting orchestras in Western Europe and the Americas and showed a particular affinity for Czech and Hungarian music (see an earlier post of music by Kodaly here on MIMIC).
Although some may prefer performances conducted by his fellow Czech, Rafael Kubelik, this is an outstanding release. Personally, my guilty preference for Ma Vlast recordings is with non-Czech performances - Paavo Berglund with Staatskapelle Dresden and Malcolm Sargent with the Royal Philharmonic - both EMI recordings.
