Chandos SACD CHSA5002 (recorded in January 2002; SACD/CD issued 2003)

For me, this is one of the jewels of the Chandos catalogue. As with the previously posted London Symphony, this recording has already appeared on a number of download sites but this rip from SACD which I have converted to 24bit/96kHz flacs (not my rip - many thanks to the original uploader) provides superior sound quality.
This was the first recording of the rediscovered Norfolk Rhapsody No.2 and is extraordinarily fine - revealing a minor masterpiece, expertly restored by Stephen Hogger. Until this recording, the work had not been performed since 1914 and there has been only one subsequent recording - by the Scottish National Orchestra conducted by Martin Yates and issued on the Dutton label. The accompanying familiar Norfolk Rhapsody No.1 and the curiously Grainger-ish titled The Running Set are equally fine.
I very much like this performance of the Pastoral Symphony but those who prefer the pastoral scene to be more French WW1 battlefields rather than English countryside may find it not bleak enough. The important trumpet solos are beautifully played - not at all bugle like as in some recent recordings of the work - and Rebecca Evans' voice is more prominent in the mix than in many recordings.
Again the late Richard Hickox proves to have been an excellent interpreter of Vaughan William's music and is well supported by Chandos' fine recording.
Because of the large size of the files, I have posted them in a folder and you can select how many to download at one time.
