01. - 04. Jean Sibelius - Symphony No.2 in D major, op.43 [44'40]
BBC Symphony Orchestra conducted by Malcolm Sargent
His Master's Voice ALP 1639 (mono LP; recording date unknown; first issued 1958)
(Digital download - mono flacs; LP cover and sleeve-back scans only)
Recording venue, Engineer and Producer: unknown
Following Arepomd's post here on MIMIC of the EMI/Warner Icon box of recordings conducted by Sir Malcolm, here is a download of the missing Sibelius Symphony No.2. The recording was first issued in Europe as His Master's Voice ALP 1639 and in Canada/USA as Capitol Records G7124 and subsequently reissued as Music For Pleasure MFP 2052. As far as I know, it has never been issued by EMI/Warner on CD.
There seems to be some mystery about this recording. Although first issued on LP in 1958, it appears that it was only recorded in mono. Or, at least, if it was also recorded in stereo, this tape is missing. I obtained this digital download some time ago and can no longer remember the source - many thanks to the original ripper/uploader. I was also unable to uncover any discographic information.
Unfortunately, the sound quality is a bit harsh and thin sounding - more like early 1950s rather than 1958. It's no match for the same team's Holst recordings, also first issued at around the same time. (It would be great if somebody could locate a master tape for digitisation.) I have also only been able to source fairly poor quality cover images and sleeve- backs from internet sources.
