During the late 1980s and early 1990s, EMI-Angel issued a series of music theater and associated recordings directed by the great music theater archivist, John McGlinn. He was one of the principal proponents of authentic studio cast recordings of Broadway musicals, using original orchestrations and vocal arrangements. The series started with a disc of Gershwin songs with Kiri Te Kanawa and this recording of Gershwin Overtures performed in period style - using a pit-size pickup band of New York musicians.

The series proceeded with complete musicals by Jerome Kern, Gershwin, Cole Porter and many others; all using period scores. Probably the best remembered is the complete Show Boat starring Frederica von Stade, Bruce Hubbard and Teresa Stratas and lasting almost four hours. McGlinn's EMI recording contract was not renewed in 1992 and he died in 2009 at the young age of 55.
