Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
01. - 04. Symphony No.6 in B minor, op.74 'Pathétique' [45'50]
London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Adrian Boult
Somerset SF-10100 (recorded 19/20 May 1959; LP issued 1960)
(LP-rip; flacs, cover and back scans)
Recording venue: St. Mary Magdalene, Paddington, London
Recording engineers: Eric Beurman & W Wille; Producer: D L Miller
This recording, made by Miller International, was issued as LP in the USA on the Somerset label and in Europe on Pye Golden Guinea. Amazingly, it has never been properly digitised from the original master tape and issued on CD or as a digital download. There was a terrible-sounding download offered for sale on the Emkay label by Qobuz and others and there is a "fake" lossless download offered for sale at Bandcamp which is equally terrible. Both are to be avoided at all costs.
I have loved this performance ever since purchasing a Pye Golden Guinea mono LP back in the early 1960s and it remains a personal favourite. Sir Adrian achieves beautifully flowing lines with no wallowing in sentiment.
This LP rip made from the US release was sent to me some years ago by a friend and the sound is quite acceptable although it reveals some thinness in the strings and congestion in both strings and brass at times - especially in the second and third movements. The rip came without any documentation so the sleeve scans have been sourced from the internet. I have also heard a rip made from the the UK stereo LP release to CD issued by Classical Recording Quarterly (CRQ) which is quite similar but with slightly less openness in the sound - probably down to the playback equipment used. Strangely, this CRQ rip is supposedly the source for the Bandcamp download, but it is infinitely superior.
It would be great if somebody were to issue a digitisation from the master tape but I still doubt that the sound quality would match that being provided by Everest to Boult and Sargent at around the same time.
Miller International also recorded Sir Adrian and the London Philharmonic in Tchaikovsky's Fifth Symphony in the same venue and at around the same time. Again the results are fine but the performance is rather more idiosyncratic than the Sixth.
