Unicorn Kanchana DKPCD 9035 (recorded December 1983; CD issued 1984)

(flac and scans)

Recording venue: Rosslyn Hill Unitarian Chapel, Hampstead
Recording engineer: Bob Auger; Producer: Siva Oke

The British mezzo-soprano Sarah Walker was born in 1943 and is probably best known as an opera and lieder singer. This is a very satisfying collection of mostly unfamiliar French songs (the Enescu set are particularly attractive). Although originally issued with this simple title "French Songs", subsequent re-issues and internet references have changed the name to "Romantic French Songs". Quite why, I have no idea. Sarah Walker's collaboration with Roger Vignoles is on a high level with excellent enunciation and exquisite pianism. As usual, with Bob Auger, the recorded sound is excellent. (My apologies to French readers for the lack of accents on the letters of music titles in the tags - my keyboard doesn't do them.)

Recording engineer: Bob Auger; Producer: Andrew Keener

Jill Gomez and John Constable have come up with a refreshingly unorthodox and unforgettable recital of  'Cabaret Classics'. At that time, nobody had brought quite such seriousness of purpose allied to such an appropriate voice to songs by such diverse composers. For each, she finds just the right style and many will be surprised to discover such attractive melodies in Schoenberg's songs.

This was one of the now prolific producer, Andrew Keener's, earlier productions, made not long after he gave up being a music and  record reviewer and began creating wonderful records instead.

This CD seemingly never reached international distribution---the booklet is in Polish---which in my humble opinion is a shame, since both the music and the performance are terrific. I went to one of the few places in which it is available and bought it. Unfortunately, the libretto (in a separate file) is in Italian and Polish only.

London Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Sir Adrian Boult

Lyrita SRCD221 (recorded January 1968 - Symphony No.1; CD issued 2007)

(flac and scans)

Recording venue: Symphony No.1 - Walthamstow Assembly Hall, London; Symphony No.2 - Not disclosed
Recording engineer and Producer: A Decca team - specific personnel not disclosed. Digital remastering: Simon Gibson

I think these are probably, all round, Sir Adrian's finest recordings of the two Elgar symphonies. There is more urgency to the performances than in his later mid-1970s EMI recordings and much finer sound than the earlier mono studio recordings and live stereo recordings. In fact, the sound in Simon Gibson's digital remastering is outstanding - superior to many more recent digital recordings and with no audible analog tape hiss (at least, not listening through loudspeakers). They are a stunning tribute to the original Decca recording team (sadly not identified) and the original tobacco company sponsors. There's also excellent booklet notes from Elgar scholar, Michael Kennedy (in English only).

Whilst neither performance would represent my absolute favourites (John Barbirolli/Philharmonia and Sakari Oramo/Royal Stockholm Philharmonic in No.1 - Vernon Handley/London Philharmonic and Sakari Oramo in No.2) they are very fine indeed.

Boult accepted Richard Itter's invitation to record the symphonies for his Lyrita label at a time when his recording career had stalled. The controversy over Sir Adrian being persuaded to group all the violins together (against his normal practice to split the first and seconds) probably resulted in a perception that these were sub-par recordings and contributed to the inordinate long time before they appeared on CD - but the results emphatically show that this was not the case.
